If a person standing on the insulating mat becomes electrostatically charged by a Van de Graaff generator or an Wimshurst machine, they can ‘gently’ (i.e. not ‘abruptly’) discharge themselves using the electrostatic discharge rod. By running one hand along the rod, the electrostatic discharge pulse (discharge current surge) is bypassed or at least significantly attenuated.
A round wooden rod with a hole at one end to accommodate a connecting lead (laboratory cable) for ‘earthing’.
